BEST INDIE POP - WEEK 13 2014
Everybody, yeah yeah. Twerk your body yeah yeah. PopSmut’s back alright! The Desperado Tour a.k.a. (Backstreet Boys & Spice Girls) is coming to a city near you. But I’m not here to tell you what you already know. I’m here to let you in on the top pop alternative pop songs of the week that won our tiny little hearts over. In other news, Chris Martin is single again, yeahy!!! Perhaps his music will no longer sound like a painful ear enema. Crap, let’s quickly get through this week’s picks before my ADD gets the best of me.
CYMBALS - THE NATURAL WORLD (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
For a band that denies they make synth-pop music (how rebellious and hipster of them), they are quite good at it. Their change in sound is heading in the right direction...after all, they did earn a spot on the top unknown artists of SXSW. Oh, and the video is mucho awesome!
YEARS & YEARS - REAL
I can’t tell you how many times I come across videos that I’m not quite sure how they fit the music. This is not the case. I repeat, this is not the case. Brilliant dancing that matches the catchy hooks. I’m finding it really easy to get hooked on this.
PHARRELL WILLIAMS - HUNTER
If Prince and Diana Ross were to have a music baby, it would sound exactly like ‘Hunter.’ Anyone else feel like this track is half assed? I bet you he wrote this track while eating a sandwich.
SAY LOU LOU - EVERYTHING WE TOUCH
I was immediately convinced that the next big thing in music would be Say Lou Lou, but why do I feel that the majority of you guys have not caught on? C’mon... I mean, they are two incredibly hot chicks who have a knack for creating ethereal music. What’s not to love?
X PRIEST X - ISN’T IT SO
This is indie gold. The latest surprise of a track comes from Florida duo X Priest X. "Isn’t It So" is the perfect sad lo-fi song to accompany you on a midnight drive down the coast somewhere.
ELLIPHANT - REVOLUTION
Yes, it’s true, Elliphant is perhaps the trippiest, most alluring and interesting artist we’ve come across this year. The video has a Die Antwoord feel to it, which I love. The crazier the better.
LONDON GRAMMAR - THE DEVIL INSIDE ( INXS COVER)
Hang on to your panties. London Grammar has stripped down and reinvented INXS’ “The Devil Inside,” turning it from a classic 80s pop track into a four minute haunting ballad with a killer crescendo. Mah gwad thagt Hannah is amazeballs.
HAERTS - CALL MY NAME
The more I listen to HAERTS, the more I fall in love with them each and every time. Their latest single is truly stunning and perfectly in tune with their warm and melancholic style.
DESTINY’S CHILD - BILLS, BILLS, BILLS (GENIUS VISION COVER)
Producer Genius has taken DC’s hit track to new heights and forces my feet to move uncontrollably.
BANKS - ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY (ACOUSTIC COVER) - BBC RADIO 1 LIVE LOUNGE W/ PHIL AND ALICE
Banks has been getting lots of attention lately and it’s obvious why... Ugh. So freaking good. I love EVERYTHING BANKS does. She definitely adds her magic to a great cover. Her work up to now has been flawless. Make sure to keep your eyes on her.
ONLY REAL - CADILLAC GIRL
We were drawn to him late last year, and upon first listen I was a fan of his raw and charming sound. He reminds me of the sweet badass...and who doesn’t love a sweet badass?! This is just the beginning for the UK solo artist.
GALANTIS - THE HEART THAT I’M HEARING
Christian and Linus are on a role! They’ve released another single off their upcoming EP, and according to their feed, they are releasing ANOTHER track today. So head on over to their SoundCloud page to check it out.

Alright my little pretties, my time here is up. Must go catch up on the latest fuckeries of the pop scene. See you next week.
About Beca Arredondo
Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
