BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 19

5/9/18

Take out your little black books because it’s time you cross off Grimes from your list. Boo hoo! Don’t cry, her and her new billionaire boyfriend are the best thing to happen to us. Jay Z and Beyonce ain’t got nothing on this hot new power couple. Sure, this love is beyond our comprehension but you know what’s easier to take in … a brand spanking new playlist of the best indie pop songs that is as exciting and strange and fresh and calculated as the new found love between the goth princess and her nerd king.

OLIVER NELSON, TOBTOK - 99 RED BALLOONS FT. RIVER

We’re kicking things off with an upbeat track that will take you back to the 80’s. The anti-war protest song “99 Red Balloons” originally recorded by indie band Nena gets a sweet tropical house makeover for it’s 35th year anniversary. Visually and sonically, this is one single that will make you want to get up and dance.

CHILDISH GAMBINO - THIS IS AMERICA

Hot on everyone’s eyes and minds, Childish Gambino pushes or shall I say pulls current social triggers happening in our backyard. We can either choose to remain blind or take notice of the things going on in the world around us … either pill you choose to swallow “This Is America” only scratches the surface of the events that have taken place in the short existence of this country.  Anyways, enough of my two cents, let’s get back to beats.

ASHE - CHOIRS

Ahead of her debut EP The Rabbit Hole, indie pop songstress Ashe delivers a stunning new single “Choirs.” The psycho pop essence behind the string driven melody captures the literal inspiration of the song. As listeners we can fully understand Ashe’s herself words, “Writing ‘Choirs’ was my way of dealing with the voices in my head: my own pressures and dreams, and the expectations and rules of others.”

FELIX SNOW - REMINDED BUFFALO (FEAT TYSM)

Felix Snow continues to rock productions with his glittering pop stroke of genius. His latest slice of pop features the chopped vocals of girlfriend TYSM. Despite the distorted vocals where at first listen is hard to understand, “Reminded Buffalo” is a stunning ethereal lullaby that captures the  memories of what could have been.

LSD - GENIUS FT. SIA, DIPLO, LABRINTH

Labrinth, SIA, Diplo get together and make LSD! Calm down, by LSD I don’t mean that they’re creating acid after hours. They’re just making trippy banging music that even those who are more into EDM can find something enjoyable about pop…. It’s a hybrid. Ge - ge - ge- genius!

KYLE - PLAYINWITME FEAT. KEHLANI

Dear younger generation, I hope the next sentence makes sense: Daannng. Kyle and Kehlani got hella klout! Just roll with it … watch the video you’ll see what I’m talking about.

DENZEL CURRY - SUMO

And he said he was quitting rap. Wait, what’s that you say Denzel? Oh, SIKE! Back from a brief break, Denzel Curry is in our ears with his explosive in your face with “SUMO.” Hang on to your hair and chair because this track comes at full force.

AMY SHARK - I SAID HI

Australian singer-songwriter releases a track that says more than Hi. If you’ve yet to jump on the Amy Shark train, her single “ I Said Hi” will win you over because it screams HERE I AM, ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE or something like that. The singer’s debut LP Love Monster can be yours in June!

CHROMEO - BAD DECISION

Mmmmhmmm, Chromeo is channeling some Prince in “Bad Decision” and it’s as good as every bad decision I’ve ever made … it was worthwhile with the exception that there is no regret with listening to the funkalicious track above. “Bad Decisions” forms part of their upcoming album Head Over Heels, due June 15th.

CLARA MAE - I FORGOT

This little gem released earlier this year almost slipped through the cracks. Closing off with a high note “I Forgot” is the best thing that could ever happen to a heartbroken soul. Forget about how great they looked … it’s over they ain’t worth a second thought, but something worth a second and third spin is Clara Mae’s empowering single above!

Alrighty-o that’s it for now. Time for me to check back in with the internet and do some snooping around. Catch all the indie pop songs featured on today’s list here on Spotify!

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
