BEST NEW COVER: NOVO AMOR “WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE”

1/18/15

This is how you do a cover. Our old pal Novo Amor has been busy in this new year, completely remaking Guns N’ Roses’ classic track, “Welcome to the Jungle,” in his own image.

The song is brought to you by AXE Black, not to be confused with AXE White. (Note: It’s actually called Lynx Black in the UK. Global Branding is some complex sh*t.) All strange cross-promotional marketing aside, Ali Lacey takes one of the must recognizable hair metal songs ever and turns it into a sprawling, hushed, emotive ballad. It’s really quite the transformation. It’s like Bon Iver doing post-rock, only prettier.

When asked about his cover of a pop culture staple, Lacey had this to say:

"I wanted to rework this hugely powerful song to a point where it was nearly unrecognizable, giving me the chance to really make it my own. I’ve gone for a complete juxtaposition from the original, once combined with the video I think it creates something quite beautiful and striking."

And there you have it. Have a listen below:

In case you’re unfamiliar with the original, or just want a reminder of what a stark contrast the Novo Amor’s cover is, here it is:
