BEST NEW ELECTRONIC: OLIVER - HEART ATTACK FEAT. DE LA SOUL

7/2/17

It’s 2017, and according to pop culture in the ‘80s, this means I’m currently living in the future. Does it feel like that though? News is depressing, the world is getting hotter, and Daft Punk’s 2013 album R.A.M. was nothing like their 2001 masterpiece, Discovery. Where is my glitzy, techno-filled future that I was promised in The Jetsons? Thankfully for you, We Are: The Guard found it. Listen to Oliver’s fun new single, “Heart Attack” featuring De La Soul below.

OLIVER - HEART ATTACK FEAT. DE LA SOUL

To put things bluntly, “Heart Attack” is the future. It is the way.

Oliver has taken the best parts of funk, disco, house, and even hip hop and fused them all in this brilliant, retro re-imagining of the genres. The De La Soul verses are entertaining and, I’m just going to say it, might even be better than their “Feel Good Inc.” feature from way back when. I’m aware of how bold of a statement this is, but it doesn’t matter. We’re moving forward, accelerating into the vision of the future I deserve. Even with Oliver’s utilization of the talk-box in the chorus and the funky electronic melody driving the track, with a beat that sounds like it can fit in well in both the ‘70s and ‘80s, “Heart Attack” is incredibly refined and stays sounding like music we have yet to hear in this era.

To be quite honest, the chorus alone is what every pop song should try to emulate from this day forward. Katy Perrys, Taylor Swifts, step the f*ck aside. The future is now, and it is OLIVER.
