BEST NEW MUSIC: MORMOR - WHATEVER COMES TO MIND
On one hand “Whatever Comes to Mind” has got that kind of earnest indie-chill bedroom producer vibe that will make fans of artists like Toro Y Moi happy, off listening in headphones in their own bedrooms. MorMor rocks this sort of sing-songy vocal tick that sounds like when Chance the Rapper is trying to get emotional with you and talk about God. But MorMor has got this kind of off-kilter cadence that doesn’t quite hit all its marks and seems endearingly amateurish sometimes. Except like, intentionally so. Like, throw in an extra syllable to see if they’re paying attention.
And then on the other hand, MorMor melds all of this into a sexy sensual soulful crooning situation that could, should, and probably will be the next big thing. Like he’s got the kind of voice that NEEDS to be the featured vocalist hook on the next banging hip-hop track from someone not afraid to share the spotlight. One that’s on the radio more often than that fucking new Portugal. The Man song. And then before you know it MorMor willl go on to become such a worldwide sensation that you’ll have the be all like “where the hell did this guy come from” and I’ll be like “remember that article from April 2018.” and you’ll be like “DAMN REALLY?” and I’ll be like “uh huh” and you’ll be like “well I guess I should pay more attention to what We Are: The Guard posts” and I’ll be like “duh.”
I MEAN WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?! SOUL HOOKS, TAMBOURINE SHAKES BACKING THE CHORUS, IS THAT A SLIGHT LISP IN THERE?, GUITAR GROOVES THAT BELONG IN THE SMITHSONIAN. THIS SONG IS HARDER TO PIN DOWN THAN A JOB YOU ACTUALLY WANT AFTER YOU GRADUATE COLLEGE. “WHATEVER COMES TO MIND” IS SOME TOP NOTCH AWESOMENESS.
MORMOR - WHATEVER COMES TO MIND
I could make vocal comparisons to Michael Jackson, Chance the Rapper, The Weeknd and other artists you love ALL DAY and you’d be like that emoji with the the thumb and forefinger across the yellow face’s chin that you use when you’re trying to illustrate thinking about someones good point. Because it IS A good point, but that don’t mean it’s right. Fact of the matter is it’s completely unfair to the emergence of this new unique talent to bog him down with such comparisons. He may brush against similarities of the greats but this voice, both musically and vocally is completely fresh / totally unique / extremely exciting and other words from the thesaurus that define originality and adjectives to heighten them.
From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
