BEST NEW SONG: MØ - BLUR

10/23/18

For quite sometime Danish star MØ has been one of the best acts in pop, period. Her sophomore studio album Forever Neverland cements her place as one of the most unique, interesting, and talented voices in music.

One standout track from a record full of them is “Blur,” a dizzying electronic headrush of a song about mental health and feeling disoriented and disconnected in the modern age.

In short, it is unfortunately the perfect song for this place in time. An anthemic rallying cry to everyone who feels beat down, lost, confused, and trapped in this world that appears to be teetering on the brink.

This song also bangs.

MØ - BLUR

The internet is like the universe in that they’re both a seemingly endless abyss of nothingness with occasional bursts of light. So with that in mind, it’s safe to presume I’m not the first person to think or write this.

But “Blur” (which I like very much) sounds almost exactly like the Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind?”. There could be million different reasons and explanations for this. I chose to believe that this track is meant as a direct homage to the song most famous for being played at the end of Fight Club (a very prescient movie about how fascist movements get started that has been wildly misinterpreted by the culture at large). I have no evidence on which to base the claim of this particular allusion but a brief Google search turned up no evidence to disprove it, so decide for yourself.

The subject matter is similar as is the overall melodies and riffs. “Let me out, I’m trapped in a blur” is more or less another way of asking where is my mind, for christsakes. Even the harmonious adlibs sound like a take on the backing vocals of the Pixies cut.

I don’t mean any of this to discredit MØ or take away from how awesome “Blur” is. This is just to say that it reminded me of another great song and now I have both on repeat. You’d be advised to follow suit.

MØ will be touring Europe this fall and winter, peep her official site for that info. When the calendar turns to 2019 she’ll be gracing North America with her presence. Dates and venues can be found below.

Calvin Paradise is not any one thing. The half-hearted vagabond and forgetful luddite currently resides in Los Angeles and how he spends his time is none of your damned business.
