BEST NEW SONG: SLENDERBODIES - TOXIC (BRITNEY SPEARS COVER)

9/19/18

Real heads know my stance on covers, that you need to present the song in a new light in order for it for it to be worth anyone's while beyond a single listen. California duo slenderbodies took note and transformed “Toxic” into a nu disco-chill wave hybrid that is mesmerizing.

If you’re not immediately sure what we’re talking about when we talk about “Toxic” please get yourself right with G*d because judgement is coming hard and swift. And get cultured already you ignorant mofo. Britney has been a single name superstar for a decade plus now. Yet despite her ubiquity, covers of her work tend to be few and far between. Or they’re are just semi-ironic ones of “Baby One More Time,” which aren’t necessarily bad, but are a one-note gag at best.

Enter slederbodies to save the day and completely warp “Toxic” in their own image. Reverb soaked guitars reimagine the song’s famous hook and give it a relaxing surf lounge vibe. Shimmering hooks and lush melodies flesh out the rest of this gorgeous cover.  Warm overtones replace the frantic pace of the original. And while bits of it still remain, this is ultimately a slenderbodies song more than it is a cover.

And it’s fantastic.
