Best New Tracks: Till Death "Black Halo"

3/14/13

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this latest new song from UK rockers (used here as the most arbitrary of signifiers) Till Death. This track, "Black Halo", is part black metal, part electronica, part hip hop, part trap, part whatever-I-left-out.

On the one hand I'm not sure who's going to be listening to this track. They're mixing a bunch of niche genres here, which will likely alienate each of those genres' hardcore fans. On the other hand, it's a good song and there's something to be said for putting your music out there and hoping it finds an audience.

Or they're just hoping that in the venn diagram of trap and metal fans the middle section is fucking huge.

Listen to Till Death "Black Halo" below:

This feels like the point where I should tell you while researching this piece I was on the band's Facebook page where in the about section I read "Frank Major, Director of Disturbia Clothing" too quickly. I googled "Frank Major Director" and came across this astonishing IMDB page (link probably NSFW) and thought THAT was the Frank Major in Till Death. Until I realized my error I had to entirely reconsider this group and their music. For about five minutes I was convinced this was the most radical/surreal music I had ever listened to. Is it metal? Is it trap? Is it a soundtrack to a porno?

When I realized my mistake I just went back to thinking it was some pretty interesting genre-fusion.

You can find "Black Halo" on Till Death's (you guessed it) Black Halo EP, out now.
