Krewella "Play Hard" EP Reviewed

6/19/12

You'd think that growing up listening to bands like Pavement, Badly Drawn Boy, and Air I would have learned that a shitty name doesn't necessarily beget shitty music. Yet here I am reviewing Krewella's debut EP Play Hard and before I've even heard a note I want to dislike them. The fact that they look like extras from The OC isn't helping their cause either. But if you can get past the punny name, outdated fashion sense, and any other preconceived notions you might have, there's a lot to like about Krewella.

As we've mentioned in this space before, Krewella separates themselves from the EDM masses by having not one, but two girls in the band. Oh, and the fact that they actually write songs as opposed to background music for video games helps too.

All the typical EDM themes are here: freedom, partying, euphemisms for drug use, indifference to outsiders, love, etc., etc., but instead of using these themes in the most ambiguous way possible, as is the current status quo for EDM, they use them to craft an actual cohesive narrative.

Krewella's older singles, "Killin' It" and "One Minute," make the debut EP and they're just as good now as when they came out several months ago. The title track is also a stand out, setting the tone for the entire EP as the opener. But don't take my word for it, stream the whole thing below:

Play Hard is out now; pick it up exclusively at Beatport. Thanks for checking out our Blogs On Music.
