Sex sells! Case in point? “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, as lifted from the band's 1984 debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome!
This song caused a MAJOR scandal at the time of release for its suggestive lyrics, which Mark O'Toole later admitted were “about shagging.”
To make matters all the more controversial, manager, Paul Morley, launched a print ad campaign around the single's release, containing the words: “ALL THE NICE BOYS LOVE SEA MEN. Frankie Goes to Hollywood are coming, making Duran Duran lick the shit off their shoes."
And I haven't even mentioned THIS infamous video!
Which was later replaced by THIS video!
But despite the BBC banning the song AND both videos, “Relax” was still a #1 hit in Britain (where it is now the seventh best-selling single of all time). It also charted at #10 here in the US.
