Today's Candy: Journey 'Separate Ways'
Hey, guess what, Glee fans! There is more to Journey than “Don't Stop Believin!” I mean, SHIT! These Californian cornballs were one of the BEST prog rock bands of the late seventies/early eighties!
“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” dropped in 1983, two years after “Don't Stop Believin.” It is lifted from Journey's eighth album, Frontiers, which may rock your face off if you are not careful.
The song – which peaked at #8 in the US - was inspired by the painful (and expensive) divorces that guitarist, Neal Schon, and bass player, Ross Valory, were both going through at the time.
Shitty subject matter aside, this has to be one of my favorite “pump up” songs from the 1980s (file next to Foreigner and Asia). As soon as that almighty chorus hits, I just wanna KICK SOME ASS/GROW A PENIS/SCREAM FROM A MOUNTAINTOP!
And the video! Oh the fucking VIDEO! It is the best/worst thing that you will ever witness in your ENTIRE life. Just behold the mind-blowing air instruments! And the slick camera angles, the air grabbing, the fist pumping, the walking through a construction site backwards... And best of all. It is done without a SHRED of sarcasm!
Lyrics:
Here we stand
Worlds apart, hearts broken in two, two, two
Sleepless nights
Losing ground
I'm reaching for you, you, you
Feelin' that it's gone
Can change your mind
If we can't go on
To survive the tide love divides
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways
Troubled times
Caught between confusions and pain, pain, pain
Distant eyes
Promises we made were in vain, vain, vain
If you must go, I wish you love
You'll never walk alone
Take care my love
Miss you love
(chorus twice)
I still love you girl
I really love you girl
And if he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
No, No
