TOP ALTERNATIVE CHILL - WEEK 50 2014

12/12/14

With less than a fortnight to go until Christmas, you may be starting to feel your stress levels rising to boiling point. Don't sweat it, however, as BitCandy has been searching high and low across the blogosphere for the top alternative chill of the week. Featuring Hippie Sabotage, XXYYXX, Atu and many more, the following roundup will help you to relax just in time for December 25, leaving you free to eat and drink as much as possible, only for you to send it back down your ironic Christmas jumper later that evening. You're welcome.

BROILER (FEAT. RAVVEL) – WILD EYES

Have you ever stopped and thought to yourself: “What's #1 in Norway at the moment?” Me neither, but it turns out it's not a black metal song, nor is it Taylor Swift like here, but this lovely saxophone-infused number from the Drammen producer duo and apparent “internet phenomenon,” Broiler.

KIINGS AND COLIN PLANT – STARTING TO THINK (THEY MIGHT BE ON TO SOMETHING)

In October, Kiings and Colin Plant helped us to come to terms with the fact summer was over with their autumnal breed of neo-soul, so to thank them, we made this video. Bringing together a montage of images almost as chill as the song itself, it's the least we could do.

TYCHO – MONTANA (CHRISTOPHER WILLITS REMIX)

Tycho and Christopher Willits together as one? I can't even. This is too much. A truly perfect slice of ambient music to enrich the senses. To quote the SoundCloud user, Tim MacQueen: “This remix is like the audio equivalent of a Gaussian blur.”

HIPPIE SABOTAGE – WAITING TOO LONG

When Hippie Sabotage deleted their music from SoundCloud recently, I figured they were either a) breaking up or b) making way for something huge. Thank God it was the latter. If you think the Sacramento sibling duo can only do remixes, think again. “Waiting Too Long” is everything.

P REIGN (FEAT. DRAKE AND FUTURE) – DNF (XXYYXX REMIX)

My body is ready.

my body is ready

ATU – VACANT

Atu never disappoints. On his latest single, or demo according to SoundCloud, “Vacant,” the Detroit producer pours a cocktail of R&B vocal samples over a luxurious bed of piano and strings, before taking it to the next level with some obligatory hard-hitting bass and percussion. Never disappoints.

DALITT – FIEND

“I had cocaine for breakfast.” That's how I feel having listened to this song for the past two hours. Produced by the New Zealand beat-maker, Samuel Truth, “Fiend” is a bold, audacious and disconcerting slice of electronica that introduces the Indian artist, Dalitt, in mind-blowing style.

KID HNRK – SPIEGELWELT

A vintage vapor-witch-sea-punk-house-wave classic from the enigmatic German producer and Spooky Black associate, Kid HNRK, here. And by vintage classic, I obviously mean seven months old. And by vapor-witch-sea-punk-house-wave, I obviously mean the chillest fucking shit ever.

CLEVELAND – FLARES

This is gorgeous. By bringing together the organic and the mechanic on “Flares,” the Toronto duo, Cleveland, have definitely achieved their aim of “defining new sounds, through post-ambient, electronic, and various vocal influences.” Think Animal Collective on analgesics.

TOBIAS – SOMETHING

Concluding with this lo-fi, soulful number from the upcoming New York producer, Tobias. Featuring Everett Orr on vocals, “Something” is imbued with a pure, blissful ambience that simultaneously brings to mind the works of Jai Paul and Tycho. 2015 is waiting for you, Tobias.

That's a wrap, but BitCandy are back with the top alternative chill of the week next Friday. Feel free to donate cookies in support of our efforts. Thank you.

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
