TOP CHILL OUT MUSIC - WEEK 4 2014

1/17/14

Hey you, Friday. You're awesome, you know that? Not only do you mark the end of the working week (unless you work weekends, sucks to be you), but you're also the day on which BitCandy publish the top chill out music of the week. I hope you enjoy today's selections from Galimatias, Blood Cultures, Asgeir and more. If you do, let me know in the comments, but if you don't, sign up to be a Curator and tell me what the hell I should feature, asshole. I didn't mean that, please don't go.

FREESCHA – WATCHA GONNA GO FOR IT?

Kicking off with a classic from one of my favorite chill bands, Freescha, because. Because I want to. Christ. If you happen to be a fan of Air or Röyksopp (which would make sense, you're reading this), check out the album, What's Come Inside of You, free on Youtube courtesy of this nice person.

MOVEMENT – US (LIVE)

I can't stop watching this clip from Movement's Modular Sessions filmed at National Art School, even if it's a rip off of Jai Paul's “Jasmine.” Can you believe this has 1000 views and “Wrecking Ball” has 500,000,000? Speaking of fucking “Wrecking Ball,” wait until you see the end of this post.

FRYARS – TU

Not gonna lie, I kind of want Fryars to lock down a sound. How can a dude go from synth pop gems like “Cool Like Me” to Tyler the Creator impressions like “Wedding Crashers Pt. I & II” to ambient compositions like “Tu,” dude? I'm into experimentation (that's what she said), but I need a direction.

WATERSTRIDER – TWICE (LITTLE DRAGON COVER)

7 years ago (holy crap, 7 years ago), Little Dragon arrived on the music scene with their eponymous debut album. It was opened by “Twice,” a song which makes me cry like a baby to this very day. Props to Waterstrider for not destroying that for me with this guitar based reinterpretation. Dat coda.

DREW HILL – SOLITUDE

You're probably expecting me to tell you who Drew Hill are, but as it just so happens, I didn't know who Drew Hill were. So I Googled it. But oh no, you're too good for that, you've got to come to me for information about this British deep house duo. Shit, I've already told you far too much. Go away.

GALIMATIAS & SORROW – SUBSIDE

Fresh off the back of those lovely collaborations with Alina Baraz, Galimatias has teamed up with British producer, Sorrow, on something more hard hitting. You can hear the influence of Sorrow's homeland on this. If only Youtube wasn't killing my vibe by recommending Lea Michele on the side.

INDI – STAY – CURATOR DUFFSTER

Indira Force wrote “Stay” at the beginning of 2013, but for some reason or another, she only got around to uploading the self described “deathcore” song to Soundcloud earlier this month. Maybe she was too busy being another New Zealand born and bred cutie pie. Sweet production, by the way.

NEXOW & SEAWAVES – FIREWORK

French producer, Nexow, employs the vocal talents of British duo, Seawaves, on this dream pop counterpart to Katy Perry. If you dig “Firework,” don't forget to grab a copy of BitCandy's Winter 2014 New Indie Sampler featuring “Born to Fly” by Seawaves. It's my blog and I'll plug if I want to.

BLOOD CULTURES – MERCURY CHILD

3 months down the line, and Blood Cultures has unveiled the follow up to “Indian Summer,” which has racked up 300,000 plays on Soundcloud. It's the balaclava. Bitches love balaclavas. Oh, and I'd say “Mercury Child” was worth the wait, but in all honesty, I'd forgotten about him in the meantime.

ÁSGEIR – WRECKING BALL (MILEY CYRUS COVER)

I'm tired of “Wrecking Ball,” and I'm tired of of fat, naked guys recreating it for shits and giggles. But my sweet, sweet Ásgeir can convince me of anything. And I mean anything. Call me, Ásgeir. I've got a new rule. You're only permitted to cover “Wrecking Ball” if you have an Icelandic accent.

That's it for this week's dose of top chill out music, but don't cry hipster child, as I'm back next Friday for even more tuneage. Feel free to tell me what you thought of today's post in the comments (it was awesome, I know), and if you'd like to contribute to future roundups, sign up to be a Curator.

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
