TOP INDIE POP: WEEK 42

10/18/17

The year is flying by faster than what we are filtering through music! Our ears are non stop listening, but the music keeps on coming. This is great! Though filtering has its downfalls, the reward of finding those musical gems is sweet. Danceable beats and catchy hooks make the cramping of my fingers all worthwhile. So join me, join us here at We Are: The Guard as we jump straight into this week’s edition of the Best in Indie Pop.

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING - NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES

Everything Everything takes their style back to when they first began playing music as a band. Their sound has certainly been refined as their music videos,  but this time around they take a DIY approach for their video “Night of The Long Knives.” Perhaps this is a way for them to feel grounded and connected with their roots, and they may as well enjoy this moment because they are on a straight path for greater things to come.

BECK - COLORS (SLIME VISUALIZER)

You know, I didn’t understand this whole slime thing until I got myself a DIY (borax and shaving cream, try it) kit. I am now a proud slime fiend. And here to satisfy that monster in all of us is Beck with a beautiful visualizer for “Colors,” and yes, the main star of this satisfying video is SLIME!

WALK THE MOON - HEADPHONES

In need of some good ol’ new sounding rock? Well, Walk The Moon has got you covered. ”Headphone” is from their forthcoming album What If Nothing coming out in November,   and it’s packed with the high energy needed to perk our week up and keep us running on the wheel till Friday.

TEI SHI - SAY YOU DO

Though, nobody will ever come close to the talents of Britney Spears, Tei Shi’s beautiful intro in her video “Say You Do” puts her right up there with the Spears. The insecurities as a child followed Tei Shi into her career as a singer songwriter. But in some cases,  fears are good, insecurities are good, they push people to bring out their best. Now listen and fall in love with a talent that should be on everyone’s playlist.

LOOTE - OUT OF MY HEAD

Catch them before the blogosphere gets their hands on them. Loote may very well be the next big thing, they have all the right ingredients to propel them into a bigger playing field.  “I am the queen of overthinking / That's why I'm always drinking / Something to get me / Outta my head, outta my head.” Caution: this will not be out of your head.

LOST KINGS - FIRST LOVE FEATURING SABRINA CARPENTER

I’ve always said that lost love makes for great songwriting, or going on a crazy food binge. But to save ourselves the expense of losing our figures and dignity we might just cry our emotions away as we listen to “First Love.” Sabrina Carpenter really hits me in the feels, but the bouncy beat of Lost Kings is there to pick us up like a soft squishee.

NOGA EREZ - BALKADA

Creativity and creation, art and religion, these topics cross each other in Noga Erez’s video for “Balkada.” The Tel-Aviv songstress demonstrates her talent is greater than just singing. It’s bewitching to see her words come to life. If you are looking for something truly mind enhancing then just take a look at the video above.

CHEAT CODES - FEELS GREAT FEATURING FETTY WAP

Get ready to sing along to the catchiest track of the week featuring the uppity feel good vibes from Cheat Codes and vocals from Fetty Wap. You may not think this doesn’t qualify as indie, but you know what?! It dang catchy and point is, this is my list curated with the help of people like you, So if you don’t like what you hear, send your submission our way. We’ll listen.

CARA SALIMANDO - NOTHING’S GONNA HURT YOU BABY

And now for something slower, but definitely worth a listen. Salimando’s cover of “Nothing’s Going To Hurt You” by Cigarettes After Sex is nothing short of mesmerizing. Let this single soothe your pains and keep you going.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests.  On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
