TOP INDIE BANDS - WEEK 10 2014

3/3/14

As far as I'm concerned, if Trent Reznor is not at this year's Oscars, then I've got absolutely no reason to be tuning in! I don't think I can handle another three hours of Jennifer Lawrence's derp face, anyways. Plus, nobody is ever going to outshine Bjork's swan dress from 2001! So instead, I've just been sitting here filtering through this week's top indie bands for your listening pleasure. You're welcome! Thanks to the Curators who helped me out with today's pickings from Lykke Li, EMA, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and many more. If you think you've got what it takes to contribute to any of our weekly roundups, then go and sign up to be a Curator!

LYKKE LI – I NEVER LEARN

What the fuck, Lykkey Li? I thought this was going to be an epic new song, but nope, it's just a pretentious lil trailer for your forthcoming album, I Never Learn, out in May. Why are you crying, Lykkey Li? It's because you've failed to write another lead single as good as “I Follow Rivers,” isn't it? Chin up, maybe another time.

EMA – SO BLONDE

This is more like it, Lykkey Li! EMA wins today's Battle Of The Blondes. I guess that's because she's “So Blonde.” Sorry, that was such a terrible joke, can we pretend it never even happened? Anyways, is EMA transforming into a modern day Courtney Love, minus the facial herpes, addiction to heroin and so forth?

TRUST – GERYON

Come on, did you honestly think I'd get through this roundup without featuring a Trust song at any point? Don't be ridiculous! Not gonna lie, I'm kinda running out of things to say about Joyland. It's so fucking brilliant, and if I haven't convinced you to preorder it by now, then I don't even know why you're here still. Go away!

LO FANG – LOOK AWAY (LIVE)

Sorry, I'm feeling feisty today! Let's bring shit down to a more chillaxing level with this live performance of “Look Away.” Sweet violin, bro. Or is that a cello? By the way, if you're yet to pick up Lo Fang's debut album, Blue Film, then Lorde sorta hates you. She didn't invite them to open for her on her US tour for no reason!

TYCHO – SPECTRE

Can you believe we're midway into today's roundup? They do say time flies when you're having fun. Assuming you're having fun, of course. If not, sorry it's taken you so long to get to this point. Anyways, time for some intermission music from Tycho, who returns this March with Awake. Dude, is that an actual guitar solo?

DALE EARNHARDT JR. JR. – ALL YOUR BASE

This is crazy. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. have paid homage to the iconic All Your Base Are Belong To Us meme with, erm, all of the memes! Not gonna lie, the song itself is ridiculously shit, but this video is everything. It's Celebrity Deathmatch for the internet age. That said, most of these memes died out years ago. Where the hell is Doge?

PRISCILLA AHN – HOME – CURATOR BECA

At this point, I'd probably crack a joke about this being an endorsement for Spanx undergarments or something like that. For once, however, I don't feel the need to go there, even though I kinda already did, as both this song and video are frankly too gorgeous to taint with my schoolboy humor. Oh, Priscilla Ahn, why you so perfect?

FMLYBND – FAR AWAY (LIVE)

Lo Fang was going to be the only live performance today, but this footage of Matt from FMLYBND performing an acoustic rendition of “Far Away” from the band's debut EP, Gold, was just too wonderful to ignore. Pink hair, Joy Division jacket and the most beautiful falsetto voice ever? My God, he's the stuff of hipster dreams!

PATRÌCE – CAN YOU HEAR ME DREAMING? (DILLISTONE REMIX)

PATRÌCE hooked us in almost immediately with his debut single, “Smoke And Mirrors.” Thing is, we had to wait 3 months until the London artist delivered another. Fortunately, “Can You Hear Me Dreaming?” was worth the wait, and continues to be worth it, as we now have this shit hot deep house version courtesy of Dillistone!

GRIZFOLK – WAITING FOR YOU

While surfing the internet the other day, I came across a review of “Waiting For You” on a blog that shall hereby remain nameless. It compared the song to, get this, “Wake Me Up” by Avicii! Lucky for you, you read BitCandy instead, and we'd much rather compare it to “Hey Brother.” Only kidding! Grizfolk shit all over Avicii.

That's it for this week's top indie bands, hipsters! I'm back next Monday with more music filtered from the blogosphere. If you thought today's roundup was awesome, feel free to let me know in the comments. If you thought today's roundup sucked, sign up to be a Curator and tell me what the hell I should feature instead, douchebags!

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
