BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 1

1/5/18

With a new year comes new resolutions, new expectations, new hopes, new dreams, and most importantly new music to accompany all the highs and lows of 2018. But to truly live this year to its fullest you will have to know who’s made the Best of Indie Pop cut. So to start you off on the right foot We Are: The Guard has selected ten of the best indie tracks we’ve heard all week. Scootch in closer and get your fingers ready because you will want to make sure to take note of the following tunes from TYSM, Wingtip, H.E.R. and others. Slow clap to all of you who already knew about these artists, perhaps you should srsly consider becoming a curator … it pays to know good music.

WINGTIP - SPACE FOR US FEAT YOUNGR

Producer Wingtip spins us up into a tizzy with his dreamy production “Space” featuring the sexy vocals of U.K. singer Youngr. Together, these two artists make you want to fall into a deep sleep and dance at the same time, but I suggest you keep your eyes wide open as you sway to the grooviness of this feel good beat.

TYSM - 10

Ummm, who dis? It’s TYSM and she’s back with a track that will have you salivating for more. The Felix Snow signee has welcomed the new year with some serious luscious beats that create a beautiful balance between bubbly dance and somber ambiance. Play this track to rid yourself of any lingering holiday hangover.

H.E.R. - AVENUE

From singing on national talk shows to headlining a sold out tour, H.E.R. will definitely be p’owning 2018. She’s the voice of badassery, smooth RnB, and “Avenue” is what I wish I had done, but didn’t. I should of just drove on by, but instead here we are wishing we were as carefree as Gabi Wilson.

LADY LESHURR - ON THE ROAD

Bet all the holiday celebrating made you miss this underrated gem. No worries, we’ve got your back. While you all were sipping on the egg nog I was bumping Lady Leshurr’s latest piece loud enough for all in the complex to hear. For those who have yet to settle their ears around Lady Leshurr “On The Road” is a good place to start. Her latest album UNSTABLE drops early 2018.

BLAISE - SEEING DOUBLE PRODUCED BY IMAD ROYAL

With so many newcomers in hip hop it’s easy to be overshadowed or slip through the cracks, but Blaise seems to know a winning formula to separate himself from the competition and leave a bright impression on listeners. One take on “Seeing Double” and you’ll be hooked. Check it out above because this is one worth holding on to.

AMPM - OWN THIS GROOVE FEATURING LIYV

While the rest of America is freezing their butts off, we here in Los Angeles are enjoying sunshine and warm weather for days, and here to help spread our warm weather is the latest from AmPm with “Own This Groove.” The bouncy summery beat will make the heat rise with in you, but you have to get up and dance in order for this to work, we can’t do it all for you.

SKI MASK THE SLUMP GOD - POLTERGEIST PROD. ARNOLD IS DEAD X JIMMY DUVAL

The film Poltergeist ain’t got nothing on Ski Mask The Slump God’s production of the title. Prepare to have everything on you melt right off with the rapper's little gift to us all. In less than two minutes “Poltergeist’ will have transformed your mind, everything you once believed in will now be a lie.

BRIAN - SEE ME

New year, new beginnings, this is according to Brian who up until 2017 was known as Rich Chigga and it’s about time you pay attention to Brian. The dude has talent and perhaps with this new found name you’ll be less apprehensive about flaunting your Brian playlist at your next dinner party.

24HRS x BLACKBEAR - REGINA GEORGE

Prior to Becky with the good hair, it was Regina George who ruled the world and walked all over everyone. 15 years after the world debut of Regina George,The Beartrap and Private Club get together to create a beat so good it will have you singing along to the lyrics: It's a damn good thing talk is cheap / 'Cause you can't afford the clothes you're wearing / Daddy money, credit, cut the card, someone's headed.

BØRNS, LANA DEL REY - GOD SAVE OUR YOUNG BLOOD

Taken from Borns upcoming album Blue Madonna, dropping on January 12, his single“God Save Our Young Blood” is your biggest hipster wet dream come to life and might perhaps actually save you from whatever atrocious track you were about to accidentally hit play on. Play it loud and float my little butterflies.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests.  On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
