NEW ARTISTS: NEW NAVY

5/12/14

Ever wondered what it would sound like if Vampire Weekend went on an island vacation where they drank nothing but fruity alcoholic beverages while relaxing in hammocks and came back a better band? Well, Australian new artists, New Navy, would be it. The band first hit the scene in 2011 with their acclaimed EP, Ulluwatu, and have been making addictive, dreamy, indie-pop ever since.

NEW NAVY - REGULAR TOWN

I am absolutely in love with this track! The single’s cover features a colorful, fruity looking cocktail with all the garnishments (flamingo, beach umbrella, and all…so chill) which is super fitting. The track is just under three minutes long, taking you on a tropical journey full of handclaps, some ukelele action, and a guitar that sounds as if it’s the soundtrack to the sun reflecting on the ocean.

NEW NAVY - ZIMBABWE

Keeping up with their theme of living in a tropical vacation dreamland, this track is all about putting all those annoying adult responsibilities on the back burner and going on vacation. The video features a rundown office worker who stops caring all together and throws his responsibilities (and computer!) out the window. Just in time for summer, this will serve as the perfect song to pack your suitcase to and get you pumped enough to not worry about how fat that bikini you just bought makes you look.

NEW NAVY - OCEANS

Despite its name, “Oceans” is probably the band’s least tropical sounding track. It slowly builds into an intoxicating five minutes of interesting drum beats and a bass line that is truly a pleasure to listen to. The song features a cool guitar lead that is reminiscent of The Strokes, but with everything combined, the band ties it all together and makes it their own.

Since I’m sure you’re a lot like me and fell in love with these guys, make sure you head over to New Navy’s Facebook page and give them a ‘like’!
