New Indie Pop Finds: Shadows on Stars

10/29/12

New Finds: Shadows on Stars. Written by Jess Grant. Curated by Cassidy Rose.

Our ever on-the-ball Curators like Cassidy Rose have turned us on to plenty of boy-girl duos over the last few months, from MVSCLES to Freedom Fry to CRIM3S. Shadows on Stars are the latest dude and dudette to add to that list. But why do this Portland pair stand out from their contemporaries, I hear you cry? Well, for starters, the (extremely enigmatic) Randa Leigh and Brian Vincent genre-bend like a pair of pepped-up gymnasts!

Every time we think we have worked Shadows on Stars out, they unleash another sonic surprise to send us in a spin. Google this band and you will find the word “punk” is never far behind. And while the duo's fuzz-fuelled, “fuck it” fervor is full-time PUNK on lip-curling lo-fi numbers like “Now Your Mine”...

...“Punk Kids”...

and “Out of my Head”...

...their self-titled debut album then goes and throws in a kick ass curveball like “Here,” whose sweet pop sensibilities charm the punk socks right off of Shadows on Stars...

...or “Whiskey & Cigarettes,” whose synth and bass lines sound like they were lifted direct from a dusty New Order vinyl.

But if such schizophrenic song writing is your cup of chai (like it is ours, dahling), good news! You can grab Shadows on Stars' debut album for free (yes, they gave it away for free, in line with their DIY ethic) over at MediaFire, or if you are a total bad ass, help the band take a step towards break out and buy the album over at iTunes.
